However long it takes, the stages of grief are always moving towards acceptance – an understanding of death’s implications and a concerted adjustment to life’s new circumstances. For the Commission, this involved a gradual shift from divided public opinion over our approach to a more general consensus of approval. Indeed, during the last century the style of our cemeteries and memorials has come to shape the look of remembrance the world over. From the early days, our sites were places of pilgrimage for families and comrades of the dead; today, hundreds of thousands still come to pay their respects, to learn or simply to reflect.
